Shiprock Marathon
This is the only event of its kind on the Navajo Nation. 2008 is the Silver Anniversary (25th year) of the Shiprock Marathon & Relays. Events include a USATF certified Marathon, Marathon Relay, Half-Marathon and 10K Trail Walk. Runners from all 50 states and from around the world have participated in this soul-stirring high desert classic which passes by the amazing 40 million year old 1800’ cinder cone of Shiprock (Tsé Bit' A'í – “Rock With Wings”) visible during most of the Marathon.
The Four Corners Fitness & Wellness Association invites you to the 25th annual Shiprock Marathon & Relays on Saturday, May 3rd, 2008. Events include: Marathon (USATF certified course #NM04003DS), 5-person coed Marathon Relay, Half Marathon and non-competitive 10K Trail Walk. Since its humble beginning in the early ‘80s these races have attracted runners from all over the world to participate in the only Marathon event on the Navajo Nation. Fees:

Marathon - $55 through April 4th, then $60
Marathon Relay - $150/team through April 4th, then $175
Half Marathon - $40 through April 4th, then $45

Shiprock, NM:
Shiprock, New Mexico is located in the Four Corners region of the United States (four state borders intersect at a single point, UT, CO, NM and AZ). The city of Shiprock is at the intersection of US Hwy 491 and US Hwy 64, next to the scenic San Juan River. Shiprock is 25 miles west of Farmington, NM, 30 miles south of Cortez, CO. It is the largest community on the 25,000 square mile Navajo Nation.
Please note:
Must be at least 12 years old to participate in competitive events. The 10K Trail Walk is non-competitive. 20 miles of Route 13 will be closed (except for Event Support Vehicles) One lane of Hwy 491 will be closed for the final 6 miles of events
Bus Transportation MUST be taken to starting lines for all competitive events.
Event Description:
The Course:
The Shiprock Marathon course is certified by USA Track and Field (NM04003DS). The Marathon and 5-person Coed Marathon Relays begin near Red Valley, less than a mile from the border with Arizona on Route 13. The Colorado high desert plateau scenery is breathtaking. The point-to-point road course finishes in the city of Shiprock. There are some hills along the way, mostly gradual inclines. A course map and a detailed altitude graph are available on the website: http://www.shiprockmarathon.com/ The Marathon begins at an elevation of almost 6000’, peaks at 6070’ a couple of miles into the course, and finishes at an altitude of 4800’. The final six miles of the course are on a gentle downhill or level grade.
Half-Marathon:
The Half-Marathon takes place on the second half of the Marathon course, beginning nearby the Shiprock.
