  • Course Description:

    Welcome to the website of the Grandfather Mountain Marathon held each year during the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games, one of the largest Scottish Games in America.

    This marathon begins in Boone, NC at the Appalachian State University on the track at the Kidd Brewer Stadium, home of the 3-time NCAA Division 1 Football National Champions. The marathon then winds through the breath-taking NC Blue Ridge Mountains, over the Blue Ridge Parkway, up long steep climbs to McRae Meadows where you will be greeted by the sound of bagpipes and an estimated 15,000 spectators.

    This unique marathon will provide challenges that are overcome by the rewards.

    START TIME: 7:00 am. (No early starts !)

    START LOCATION: The Marathon begins at Kidd Brewer Stadium on the campus of Appalachian State University at Kidd Brewer Stadium in Boone, NC at 7:00 am at an elevation of 3,333 feet and climbs to an elevation of 4,279 feet where it ends on Grandfather Mountain in Linville, NC. The course is mountainous and very scenic as it winds through the Blue Ridge Mountains. The course is run predominately on asphalt (3 miles of the course is on gravel). The race will finish at McRae Meadows during the Highland Games, the 2nd largest Highland Games in the world. So make sure you look good at least at the finish in front of those 10,000+ spectators ! NOTE: much of the course will be run on state highway where traffic cannot be stopped to accommodate the runners. No early starts allowed !

    FINISH LOCATION: McRae Meadows in Linville, NC at the site of the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games

    END TIME: The official finish time will be 12:00 noon on the track and 1:00 pm at the marathon tent. We must break down the finish line at the track so the track & field events for the Highland Games can begin. Runners who cannot complete this marathon in 5 hours are encouraged not to participate.

    AID STATIONS: Gaterade and/or water will be provided at 3,6,8,11,13,15,17,19,21,23 and 25 miles. Fruit, carbohydrates and fluids will be provided at the finish. EMT services on the course provided by Watauga Rescue Squad and at the finish by the Highland Games officials.
