Runner Etiquette
The Sedona Marathon expects to welcome both novice and experienced marathoners. Whether you are in search of your personal best time, or just want the mystical experience of Sedona, we welcome you. And we want you to have the most rewarding experience you can - so with that in mind, respect your fellow runners and all the volunteers working for you.
Some thoughts to keep in mind when you are on the course:
If you need to slow down for any reason - to eat, drink, relieve a cramp - move to the side of the course. Watch out for people behind you.
Move to the side if the person behind you calls out, "Coming through or "Excuse me." Follow classic race protocol for passing.
If using a cell phone or camera, move to the side and then stop until you are done.
At fluid stations, move over gradually if you are taking a beverage. There will generally be more than one table at each station, on one side of the road, so you do not need to crowd to the first table.
When done with your beverage or refreshment, for instance when discarding trash, keep in mind that you are not in a city with plenty of sanitation workers, but reliant on volunteers keeping their small town and wilderness pristine. Toss your trash gently toward the receptacles on the side of the road. Keep an eye out for volunteers who will help direct your trash. Make sure you do not hit other participants with your trash.
In some places, the course may be crowded. Do your best not to push or bump into your fellow marathoners.
