Race Information:
This certified, scenic course follows "the coast of old Hawaii" along the Pacific Ocean, past exotic waterfalls, over narrow bridges and lava beaches. Start to mile 10 is a net downhill of 500 ft., with some hills in the first 8 miles but fairly flat after that.
Hilo is located in one of the cooler, more lush parts of the "Big Island" of Hawaii, which translates into good running conditions.
Enthusiastic volunteers at well-stocked aid stations, awards given in various age groups, entertainment and great food at the Finish Line make this a memorable event for everyone.
Deadline for mailing your entry form is March 15, 2009. SHUTTLE BUSES ARE FOR MARATHON AND 10.8-MILE RUNNERS ONLY: If you are a guest at the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel or any of the surrounding hotels you may take the shuttle to the start, which will leave from the Lobby Area of the Hilo Hawaiian at 4:30 am. and 4:45 am. Only two buses will be provided from that area.
Runners who are not staying at the hotels are asked to drive to Hilo’s Bay Front and park in the lot next to Pauahi St. From this parking lot there will be three buses taking runners to the start – the first boarding at 4:30 am, followed by 4:45 and 5. The first bus that leaves will make a return trip and pickup any late runners in the parking lot, but the bus driver is instructed to leave Bay Front at 5:20. Please do not wait for the last bus as it carries only 50 passengers and if there are more than 50 runners we will not be able to accommodate everyone to the start. Plan on coming early and taking the earliest bus to the start.
Only runners in the marathon and 10.8-mile run should take the shuttle. There is no shuttle service back to the finish line for family members and observes.
AID STATIONS: Water will be provided for the first 10 miles of the race, then there will be water and Gatorade made available for the rest of the race. Runners are encouraged to bring power gels or other easy to carry items to help aid in their performance. Please drink at every aid station and stay well hydrated.
